The Web Designer's Story
Morten and Angela from Pink and Yellow Media are seasoned web designers, but also know a little about how to develop websites.

“At Pink and Yellow, we make websites that are intuitive and visually pleasing. My brothers are ‘proper’ programmers, but I’m a designer first, and code by way of trial and error,” says Morten.

Morten had been handed a copy of Microsoft’s Expression Studio at an Expression event and decided to try it on his next project, which happened to be Zufall.

“I just dove right in and figured it out--it was easy,” says Morten. “Cascading Styles Sheets are nightmarish to work with, but Expression Web made it easy. I was able to see the changes as I made them, without saving multiple versions. Using Expression Web, I learned more about web coding in one month than I had in the previous 10 years!”

Morten built a site for Zufall following his guiding principles. The first is to design around a timeless element that represents the company. The second is to start simple and create a site that is easy to grow. Morten says a site like this can be up in as few as two weeks once the design work is done.

Zufallers now have a way to share their user experiences online. The Zufall site has a form to collect the story, which is then sent in e-mail to Valerie and Tim for review. The site also has a backend form for Valerie and Tim to post the stories.

“In the near future, we’d like to add an online version of Zufall, and make the community more interactive through chat and forums,” says Valerie.

Unplanning our lives - the story of Zufall

Chapter 1: Boy Meets Girl
Valerie grins as she describes her first date with Tim.

“He took me camping, but hadn’t planned anything! Not knowing which way and where we would go, I suggested we flip a coin to decide whether it would be a short drive or long, and then again to determine which direction.  This seemed to satisfy my need to know and Tim’s need to be spontaneous! We had so much fun, that we’ve continued these spontaneous adventures and even shared the idea with friends. That’s where the idea of Zufall came from.”

Chapter 2: A Spontaneous Company
With nudging from friends, Valerie and Tim created a company to sell the spontaneous adventure kits under the name Zufall. Rolling Zufall’s two dice determines the direction and distance of the adventure. For example, rolling a “North-4” may mean walking four blocks north to find an eatery for dinner. Or it could be driving four kilometers north and taking the first exit to find a hiking spot. Whether it’s deciding where to go to dinner or finding a new place for the weekend, Zufall makes spontaneous planning fun.

Chapter 3: Adventures on the Web
“When we were ready to take Zufall to the market, we contacted our friends over at Pink and Yellow Media,” said Valerie.

Valerie and Tim approached Morten, at Pink and Yellow Media, armed with a tin and two dice to talk about their project.
They had some grand ideas about what they wanted, but under Morton’s advice, they started with something simple that they could build on.

"Besides offering a spontaneous adventure, we wanted to offer a community where users could share their experiences. Though we wanted a simple website, we knew that the technology behind it would not be easy,” says Valerie.

It may have started out as a real-world game, but it was easy to move into cyberspace. Zufallers now have a way to share their experiences online, and plans are underway for an online version that includes community activities like chats and forums.
